When my dear wife Karen came back to her seat in the Carrier Dome after halftime Friday night, she reported an extraordinary planet sighting when she’d gone outside for a breath of cool air.

After the Orange’s 27-26 double-overtime victory over Villanova, I discovered how right she’d been.
I didn’t have to look skwyard.
A bright globe shined through the window of the Heroy Geology Building across from the dome.
The Daily Orange reports that it’s a 10-foot-in-diameter inflatable, and it has become the new look of the school’s earth sciences department.
The earth exhibit shines inside the Heroy Geology Building and its windows Friday night on the Syracuse University campus.
The vision of the replication of our dear planet shining inside the room of that building and reflecting off the other window took my breath away.
And then I had to run to catch back up with Karen and thank her for pointing out this wonder.
What depictions of our Earth have you seen in exhibits that have made you treasure exactly where we are? Did you sit and study a globe in class when you were in school? If you could visit anyplace on Earth, where would you choose, and why?

What a cool photo opportunity! I was just thinking about globes the other day and I thought how they’re probably antiquated these days…. You know how they keep changing the number of oceans and planets… I figure they’ll eventually decide the earth is actually oval or something. (Of course I’m kidding. I hope.) And the funny thing was the very next day, I saw a globe in someone’s garbage! LOL! 😀

Gorgeous! Earth is something I am so glad to live on, despite all of the Human’s frailties, mistakes and inability to get along here! I would go to Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. But then again, all of Europe, Australia and beyond entrance me….

I never really studied earth much…. but I sure do like it!
I have visited Ireland four times and would gladly go back ALWAYS. But there are other points of interest because of natural beauty or intriguing sights. I would love to see Machu Picchu. Great barrier reef. And really, any place with mountains, rock formations, land curiosities. Wait, you said one place, sorry, I can’t narrow it down. I had to stop myself from writing the whole list!

Lifelong baseball fans know that is indeed a location, Kate. I need only think back to my childhood, 1969, Flushing, home of my Mets; Baltimore, home of your (and next decade to be my adopted) Orioles for the World Series. And 1980, Memorial Stadium, I’m there to watch the Birds battle the Pirates.
So, yes.
This year, I want the Orioles back in the World Series, too, and that sure is a true location, Kate.

Where would I choose to visit? That’s a toss up. Paris or Syracuse, New York. I love the City of Lights – so much to do, see and eat. I also love Salt City – so many wonderful people to visit, places to see and food to partake. 😉 I love the globe. Inspiring. I’m glad Karen was looking out for you and shared this beauty. 😉

I am envious of your visit to Paris, my friend Judy. My only trips out of the U.S. have been to our neighbors to the north and south. I guess I owe myself an exotic foreign city like that someday.

Mark … I hope that you and Karen make that trip soon. We did and thoroughly enjoyed it. But, to me, there’s also a lot to enjoy right in our back yards. Our former stomping grounds, Syracuse and Central New York have so many amazing sites to see. It was wonderful to visit them again this summer – and great to catch up with old friends, like you, too. 😉

Globes are fascinating. We keep on upstairs in the guest room. Amazing to see all the places so far away with names we will never visit, including the country of Tuvalu, 9 square miles.

That’s an amazing looking globe Mark. What a great mnemonic to see evertime you came to class. Fabulous. I always had a globe when I was growing up. They fascinate me. I would love to visit Australia, Greece and Italy, if I ever had a chance. Great post Mark.
